Tsonga beats Federer for Rogers Cup title

By : Unknown

The 13th seed Jo-Wilfred Tsonga defeated 2nd seed Roger Federer to win the Rogers Cup title in his 4th consecutive victory over a higher ranked opponent.
He defeated Djokovic, then Murray & then Grigor Dimitrov before overcoming the odds yet again in the final against Federer by 7-5, 7-6 (3) .

The quality of the match picked up late in the first set when the score was tied at 5-5 but soon Federer launched a ball well long to give Tsonga the opening set within 44 minutes.

Tsonga kept the pressure on Federer in the second set & had a break point on 3-2 but could not capitalize.
He also had 2 break points at 4-3 but Federer answered with 2 straight points to make it a deuce.

In the tiebreaker, Tsonga picked up a mini-break at 4-3 and took the next three points for the victory.

Eugenie Bouchard crashes out of Rogers Cup

By : Unknown
Eugenie Bouchard, from Canada, reacts during her match against Shelby Rogers, of the United States, at the Rogers Cup.

The rising star fell 6-0, 2-6, 6-0 to unknown American qualifier Shelby Rogers in the 2nd round of the US women's Rogers Cup on Tuesday night.

Bouchard's homecoming included power shortage on & off the court. The match was played under lights powered by a generator, asa shortage in the area around Uniprix Stadium that began in the early afternoon had not been repaired by the end of the play. Organizers expect power to be restored by Wednesday morning.

The 20-year-old was greeted with a standing ovation at the centre court here on Tuesday after rocketing into the Top-10 of WTA rankings, qualifying for at least the Semi-Finals of all the 3 Grand Slams earlier this year.

She looked rather chilled-out, spraying shots long & wide.
She came back in the 2nd set, using her mix of crisp groundstrokes to keep Rogers off balance, but then slipped into the same funk in the third.

The match started an hour later than planned due to the power outage, which saw the scoreboards go off, the chair umpire's microphone go silent and left the players clubhouse in the dark with no hot water. Play went on despite the inconvenience.
Bouchard just wanted to move on and fix her sights on her next tournament and on the U.S. Open at the end of August.
Tournament director Eugene Lapierre felt for Bouchard, who raised interest in the sport to new levels.
The defeat left the tournament without its star attraction, although top players like Serena and Venus Williams and Maria Sharapova remain in contention.

Nadal pulls out of Rogers Cup

Nadal after Winning US Open 2013

Rafael Nadal has withdrawn from Rogers Cup due to a wrist injury.

“I’m extremely disappointed that I am unable to defend my Rogers Cup title this year,” said Nadal, who beat Canada’s Milos Raonic in last year’s final in Montreal.

“Unfortunately I injured myself yesterday during practice and after checking with my doctors I will have to stay out of competition for at least two to three weeks. I am sorry to the tournament and to all of the fans.”

Tennis fans in Canada will not be able to witness the Spanish 28-year-old champion defend his title in Toronto.

Nadal is also expected to miss the Western & Southern Open in Cincinnati, the other big summer hard-court Masters tournament, after the Rogers Cup. It opens up speculation about whether the 14-time Grand Slam champion will be fit enough to defend his U.S. Open title when that event kicks off on August 25. The New York Times reports that Nadal’s wrist will be casted for 2-3 weeks.

“We know Rafa is a fan favourite and our fans will be upset by his absence”  “But we also know that if Rafa could play he would as he has a great respect for our event and his Canadian fans.” said Karl Hale, Rogers Cup tournament director.
