Southampton:Alastair Cook fell justagonisingly short of ending his dismal spell without a Test century as he led from the front against India at Southampton on Sunday.
The England Captain won the toss & then made 95 out of England's 247/2 at stumps on the first day of the 3rd Test.
Gary Ballance, who with his captain put on 158 for the 2nd wicket, then reached three figures to be 104 not out at stumps along with Bell who was 16 not out.
Ballance has now smashed 3 hundreds & 2 fifties in his first 6 Tests.
The Indian Attack missed Ishant who was unfit for the game.
The first-wicket partnership of 55 was ended when Mohammed Shami squared up the Australia-born & Jadeja held the catch in the slips.
2 cut shots off spinners Rohit Sharma, playing in place of Stuart Binny, and Jadeja helped Cook to 48 not out at lunch.
He completed a 98-ball fifty as the crowd signalled its support with a standing ovation.
At tea, England were 186/1, with Cook 82 not out and Ballance 72 not out.
Alastair Cook's 5-hour innings ended when he got a bottom edge, while swiping at a long hop from left-arm spinner Jadeja, & was caught down the legside by wicketkeeper MS Dhoni.
Umpire Marais Erasmus took his time before giving him out, but replays confirmed that he was correct.
As he walked back, Cook received another standing ovation, having faced 231 balls including 9 boundaries en route to his gritty 95.
England now were 213/2, hey were fortunate when Bell survived an LBW appeal from Pankaj Singh after the bowler's excellent outswinging delivery wrapped him on the pads.
However, Singh deserved better than his figures of 0/62 in 20 overs but his was just one of several economical contributions as Indian bowlers kept England's run-rate below 3 per over .

Video: Tennis Star plays Solo in Doubles Match
In a bizzare situation, Tennis Star Taylor Townsend had to play a 2-on-1 matchup against Martina Hingis & Anastasia Rodionova, after hitting her partner in the head.
One rule that differs between World Team Tennis & Regular Tournament Tennis is that if you’re playing doubles & your partner gets hurt, instead of forfeiting the match, there's an option to play by yourself against two opponents.
Yeah, it doesn't make sense but that is exactly what happened during a WTT match. Liezel Huber & Taylor Townsend of the Philadelphia Freedoms were up against Anastasia Rodionova and Martina Hingis of the Washington Kastles. Townsend accidentally hit the back of Huber’s skull hard with a forehand & she was too hurt to continue. Taylor then decided to take on the 2 Kastles alone.
However, Townsend was forbidden from covering her absent partner’s territory, meaning she had to watch by while her opponents’ serves passed by.
Eventually, everyone looked like they had just stopped trying.
Still, though alone, Townsend was able to gather a few points, but ultimately her 'team' lost, 21-15.

Commonwealth Games 2014 day 2 Recap
Commonwealth Games 2014, Glasgow, Scotland
GLASGOW: A total of 22 Gold Medals were up for grabs on Day 2 of the Commonwealth Games 2014. It was Australia who rose to the occasion, scoring big and grabbing 4 of them. However, England continued their stay at the top of the table.
Thomas Fraser-Holmes of Australia won 2 medals for his country. Apart from winning the 200 meter freestyle swimming, he won the Silver for 400 meter Individual Mens category too. The event was won by Daniel Wallace from the host nation Scotland.
Scotland continues to perform well at the event already securing 7 Gold Medals till now. England and Scotland won big on Judo and bagged 4 Gold Medals. Abhinav Bindra, former Olympic Gold Medallist from India, won his 4th Commonwealth Games Gold Medal on 10 Meter Air Rifle Event. This is going to be his last CWG & he bowed out on a high.
However, the world was shocked even before the event started. The 400 meter hurdle champion Rhys Williams of Wales failed the Drug Test on Day 2 & was sent off from the competition. He is the 2nd athlete from Wales to fail the test after Gareth Warburton was barred from the event last week. But this was not the end of misery for Wales on Day 2.
In Hockey, Wales missed out as Men team suffered a 1-3 loss to India & Women's team were handed a drubbing of 0-9 from Australia.
