India bat to a Draw at Trent Bridge

India suffered a serious scare at the start of day 5 as England took 3 wickets for 17 runs in the 1st hour of the play. But Stuart Binny batted them to safety & was looked on course for a century on debut before Moeen Ali dismissed him LBW with 10 minutes to go for tea. B Kumar then scored his 2nd fifty of the match & England didn't get to begin a second innings as the players shook hands when MS Dhoni declared at the stroke of the final hour.
By then, Alastair Cook had provided the Trent Bridge crowd with 1 over of seemingly useless offspin & 1 over of gentle medium-pace, with which wrapped up Ishant Sharma caught behind down the leg side. Cook's Bob Willis impersonations summed up the Test match, during which it had become increasingly difficult to assess the 2 sets of players, on a surface with nothing in it for the bowlers. This test match will mostly be remembered for the lower-order batting records.
Binny showed his batting agility, but it can't be said that he completely justified his selection, it would be harsh to judge his seam bowling on this pitch. He might even find himself in the strange position of being left out of the team for the second Test after coming close to a century on debut and helping save a match from a wobbly position.
Root & Anderson stun India

James Anderson and Joe Root shared the highest last-wicket stand in Test history as England mounted a superb fourth-day fightback against India.

They put on 198 in the first Test at Trent Bridge, beating the 163 between Australia's Phil Hughes and Ashton Agar at the same ground last year.
Anderson made 81 - the highest score by an England number 11 - with Root unbeaten on 154 as England made 496.
In their second innings, India closed on 167-3 - a lead of 128.
"It's still sinking in what we've achieved. It's a great day for us," seam bowler Anderson, whose previous highest Test score was 34, told BBC Sport.

Root and Anderson had helped England recover from 298-9 to open up a first-innings lead of 39.
They came together at 17:30 BST on Friday after an England batting collapse, and resumed on Saturday with the hosts 352-9.
Root, who began the day on 78, completed his fourth Test hundred off 186 balls as he and Anderson frustrated the India bowlers on a flat pitch.
Anderson, 23 not out overnight, was dropped on 46 but thrilled a capacity crowd in recording the highest first-class score of his 168-match career.

His innings surpassed the previous highest score by an England number 11, the 59 not out made by John Snow in 1966.
India's total featured a record last-wicket stand of their own, as Bhuvneshwar Kumar and last man Mohammed Shami put on 111, and this match is also the first time two number 11s have scored fifties in the same Test.

India were in danger of surrendering to England after building a competitive total carefully over 4 sessions as they lost 4 wickets for just 4 runs after lunch today. But Bhuvneshwar Kumar & Mohammed Shami saved the day with a 111-run last-wicket stand that took out the fuel reserves of a frustrated England bowling and mustered India's total to 457.
Shortly after his heroics with the bat, Shami dismissed Alastair Cook in the 4th over of England innings, bowling the England captain round his legs as he walked too far across the stumps.
Throughout the remainder of the final session, Indian seam bowlers searched for the right length to discomfort Sam Robson and Gary Ballance. But they found themselves a bit shorter, but Ishant Sharma landed one in the perfect spot 2 overs from stumps only for the outside-edge from Ballance to drop a foot short of 2nd slip. Ravindra Jadeja, who bowled 2 overs, showed he could be key later in the Test after he got 1 ball to explode out of rough at Ballance.
