Stoke stun Champs Man City

By : Unknown

The last time Mark Hughes oversaw a victory at the Etihad Stadium, he was sacked shortly afterwards. It is safe to say a different fate awaits him now and, whether or not this constituted revenge, it was certainly a reminder of his prowess to the club that discarded him so unceremoniously.

Hughes is now approaching the fifth anniversary of his 2009 dismissal, minutes after Manchester City beat Sunderland 4-3, and when they had already lined up his successor, Roberto Mancini, and if he was miscast as a manager of a super-rich club with vaunting ambition, he has often excelled with a lesser budget and a competitive group of players.

A superlative result was achieved in spectacular style, Mame Biram Diouf running virtually the length of the pitch to score the only goal.

Nevertheless, earthier values were as important for Stoke City. Well configured by Hughes, they defended brilliantly. Manchester City, who had scored 99 times in just 30 home games under Manuel Pellegrini, were frustrated and, as the champions had won 50 of their previous 58 league matches at the Etihad Stadium, this was both a startling scoreline and, for Stoke, a deserved one.

It had seemed a sign of Manchester City’s strength in depth that they could rest Pablo Zabaleta, arguably the division’s outstanding right-back, after a solitary start this season, and introduce Bacary Sagna for his debut. The Etihad Stadium serves as a home from home for former Gunners and a combination of Arsenal alumni almost brought the opener. Sagna squared the ball for Samir Nasri, whose low shot was touched wide by Asmir Begovic.

Stoke have a sizeable former Manchester United contingent, headed by manager Hughes. Another Old Trafford old boy attempted to give them a belated first goal at the Etihad Stadium. Diouf intercepted Phil Bardsley’s hopeful effort only to scuff his shot wide. Ruled offside then, he was irritated that the officials took no action when Aleksandar Kolarov tripped him just inside the penalty area.

It was proof that, while defending in numbers, they still possessed an attacking threat. The favourites were frustrated. Stevan Jovetic squared up to Ryan Shawcross while his team-mates showed hints of rustiness. Kolarov took the wrong option when he could cross, Yaya Touré lofted a shot over the bar and, strangest of all, David Silva overhit a pass.

Briefly, however, they returned to their seductive best. Sergio Agüero darted into the penalty area, drawing a crowd of defenders to him, and released Kolarov with a backheel. The left-back took the right option this time, finding Touré, who struck the bar.

While one penalty area was packed, however, the other was virtually deserted and, inadvertently, the pressure one City exerted brought a breakthrough for the other. Stoke cleared a corner as far as Diouf, lurking a few yards outside his penalty area. He ran a further 80, brushing off Kolarov and nutmegging Fernandinho, the last defender, before sliding a shot past Joe Hart for a magnificent solo goal.

Manuel Pellegrini responded by sending for the cavalry, in the form of Edin Dzeko and Jesús Navas, but two of his starting 11, the elusive Agüero and the persistent Touré, threatened an equaliser. The latter had a shot deflected wide before being booked for diving when he claimed a penalty after an Erik Pieters challenge. As Stoke had discovered earlier, referee Lee Mason was in no mind to point to the spot.

Ronaldo jokes expressing thoughts about Messi might put him in Jail

Messi didn't deserve Golden Ball, feels Ronaldo

Ronaldo: Messi thoughts might put me in prison

Portuguese Captain Cristiano Ronaldo thinks that rival footballer Lionel Messi didn’t deserve to win the World Cup 2014 Golden Ball award this summer after the Real Madrid star joked he would be sent to prison if he gave his real opinion.

The Argentina Captain beat World Cup winner Thomas Muller & Colombia's revelation James Rodriguez to the award after scoring 4 goals at the FIFA World Cup 2014 in Brazil & carrying Argentina to the final, which they ultimately lost to Germany.

Argentina legend Diego Maradona revealed that he thought FIFA’s decision to award Messi with the Golden Ball was based on commercial & emotional reasons, Ronaldo has now hinted that the Barcelona star did not do enough during football's greatest competition to win the Golden Ball.

“If I said everything that I think, I would be in prison,” said Ronaldo, who picked up UEFA's Player of the Year award this week, when asked about his thoughts on whether his rival had earned the award.

“Everyone can see, make their own judgements, the people in the world of football are intelligent.
“It would be a very interesting question for him. I cannot be honest about it.”

The rivalry between these two superstars has been active for over half a decade now, with the Ronaldo getting one over on Messi in the Ballon d'Or earlier this year after losing out to the him for 4 consecutive years.

Kobe Bryant's text message to LeBron James

By : Unknown

LeBron’s original Decision seems like it happened an eternity ago, but perhaps the biggest change to the NBA since that pivotal offseason has been the gradual demise of the Los Angeles Lakers. When James chose to ditch Cleveland for Miami, Phil Jackson’s Lakers were two-time defending champions, and Bryant had just won consecutive Finals MVP awards.

Bryant’s text to James in the summer of 2010 is classic Kobe.

Via Bleacher Report:

With a brutal seven-game victory over the Celtics in the bank for Bryant, the 2010 offseason is dominated by LeBron James’ decision to leave Cleveland for Miami.

What matters to Bryant is Phil Jackson agreeing to return to coach the Lakers again in pursuit of a third consecutive NBA title. Bryant sends James a text message. It goes like this:

“Go ahead and get another MVP, if you want. And find the city you want to live in. But we’re going to win the championship. Don’t worry about it.”

Derrick Rose beat out James in MVP voting that year, but LeBron led the Miami to the Finals in his first season with the Heat. The Lakers did keep Jackson around and went 57-25 in the regular season, but were swept by the Mavericks in the conference semifinals.

Chelsea 2 - 0 Liechester City

London: Diego Costa and Eden Hazard scored in the second half as Chelsea finally broke down Leicester's stubborn resistance for a 2-0 victory in the Premier League on Saturday. The newly promoted visitors had threatened a major upset until Costa controlled a deflected pass from
Branislav Ivanovic in front of goal and slotted the ball past goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel in the 63rd
minute. It was Costa's second goal in two league games for Chelsea, having joined from Atletico
Madrid in the offseason. Hazard then put the result beyond doubt with a solo effort in the 77th, cutting in from the left and
sending a low shot inside the far post. Leicester missed a couple of good chances before Costa's opener, including when David Nugent came
clear through on goal but had his shot saved by the onrushing Thibaut Courtois.

Rafael Nadal pulls out of US Open

By : Unknown

Unable to recover from Wrist injury, defending Champion withdraws

Rafael Nadal pulled out of the US Open on Monday because of an injured right wrist, making him the fourth reigning men's champion in the last 45 years to sit out the tournament.

Nadal also said he expected to be able to return for the US Open itself. But on Monday, he issued a statement on his Facebook page, saying he is "very sorry to announce" he would not play in New York.

"I am sure you understand that it is a very tough moment for me since it is a tournament I love and where I have great memories from fans, the night matches, so many things," Nadal's posting read. "Not much more I can do right now, other than accept the situation and, as always in my case, work hard in order to be able to compete at the highest level once I am back."

The second-ranked Nadal plays left-handed, but he uses a two-handed backhand.
The other US Open men's singles champions who did not return to the field the following year were Ken Rosewall in 1971, Pete Sampras in 2003 and Juan Martin del Potro in 2010.
Nadal won his second championship at Flushing Meadows in 2013, part of a run of reaching the final in each of his last three appearances in the US Open. He beat Novak Djokovic to win the titles in 2010 and last year and lost to Djokovic in 2011.
But Nadal will be skipping the tournament for the second time in three years. He did not enter the US Open in 2012, part of an extended absence because of a problem with his left knee.
This will be the second time Nadal failed to try to defend a Grand Slam title. A year after winning Wimbledon in 2008, he chose to not enter that tournament, citing knee tendinitis.
Nadal is 44-8 with four titles in 2014, including his record ninth French Open trophy.
He hasn't competed since losing in the fourth round of Wimbledon to 19-year-old Nick Kyrgios in four sets on July 1.
Nadal's 14 major titles are tied with Sampras for the second most in the history of men's tennis, trailing only Roger Federer's record of 17.
With Nadal out, five-time US Open champion Federer -- now 33 but coming off a runner-up finish at Wimbledon last month and a hard-court title in Cincinnati on Sunday -- will join the No. 1-ranked Djokovic as a favorite in Flushing Meadows.

Liverpool Grab Mario Balotelli

By : Unknown

Balotelli on move to Anfield

AC Milan have agreed to let go of the Italian Striker Mario Balotelli for a reported 16 million pounds to Anfield, claimed media in England & Italy on Thursday.

The news comes as a shock 2 weeks after Liverpool Manager Brendan Rogers' statement of not making any kind of bid for the 24-year-old controversial Italian.

This comes off as a big boost for the Liverpool line-up, frustrated after not being able to land a big name move in place of Luis Suarez. Earlier during the Reds' tour of USA, Rogers stated "I can categorically tell you that he will not be coming to Liverpool." referring to Balotelli.

Balotelli scored 16 goals for Milan last season, as well as the winner in Italy's World Cup opener against England in Manaus.

Marcos Rojo has apologised for boycotting training with Sporting Lisbon to push through move to Old Trafford

Marcos Rojo looks set to complete his €20m move to Manchester United from Sporting Lisbon.

The defender confirmed that he is to join Louis van Gaal's side in an interview with Argentinian radio Continental.
“It feels like a dream, to be a Manchester United player. Leaving Sporting wasn’t easy,” he said.
The 24-year-old added that he had spoken to former United midfielder Juan Sebastian Veron about the club when they were team-mates: “He told me about them when we played for Estudiantes.”
It has been claimed that the World Cup star will sign a four-year contract, with the option of extending the deal for a further year with Nani heading the other way.
The deal could be completed as soon as tomorrow with Rojo expected to fly into Manchester later today to complete his medical.
Rojo apologised to Sporting Lisbon on Sunday evening after refusing to train in an effort to push through the move to United.
“I was hot-headed and I’m sorry. I’ll be back with the rest of the squad tomorrow,” he said.
“Sporting signed me when I was not at my best and gave me the opportunity to play for a big club in Europe. I would like to thank the trust they had in me and I will resume training on Monday.”
Van Gaal was in the market for a left-sided defender to bolster his 3-5-2 system given the three recognised centre-backs in his squad, Phil Jones, Chris Smalling and Jonny Evans, are all predominately right-sided.

saurez barca match

Luis Suarez & Neymar Jr, two names who were the highlights of two of the most important moments of the World Cup in Brazil, played their first match since then as Barcelona crushed Mexican champion Leon 6-0.

Neymar was cleared to play just hours before the game but he showed no signs of any injury & netted twice in the 12th & 44th minute after setting up the opening goal for Lionel Messi in the 3rd minute.

Barcelona youth forwards Munir El Haddadi scored in the 54th & 77th and Sandro Ramirez added another in the 89th.

Neymar to return with Suarez

By : Unknown

Strikers expected to play alongside for the first time

Neymar-Suarez

Brazilian star striker Neymar has been cleared to play for the first time since suffering a broken vertebra in his back during the 2-1 victory against Colombia in the QuarterFinal of World Cup when Barcelona play Mexican side Club Leon on Monday.
Neymar could play for the first time with the club's new signing Luis Suarez as he is expected to make his Barcelona debut after being cleared to play in friendly matches last week by the Court of Arbitration for Sport, upholding the 4-month ban from competitive games.
Neymar missed out Brazil's further World Cup campaign which consisted of the disastrous 7-1 semi-final drubbing by Germany & the 3-0 loss to the Netherlands in the 3rd place play-off on home soil after suffering the injury when he was kneed in the back by Juan Camilo Zuniga.
However, the 22-year-old revealed that had the impact of Zuniga's knee been centimetres higher, he could have been left paralyzed.
Argentine sensation Lionel Messi is also likely to get his first outing since the heartbreaking loss in the World Cup final to Germany on Monday as the Catalan Club finalize their pre-season build up to the start of La Liga when they host Elche on Sunday.

Humiliation all over for India

England demolish India to take the series 3-1

Alastair Cook leads England on their lap of honour
The so-called next generation of Indian Team which flew to England with high expectations couldn't even exist in the competition after a fluke win in the 2nd Test at Lord's, thrashing the expectations of millions of Indian Cricket enthusiasts all over the world who were bidding Pujara & Kohli as the next Legendary pair of Indian Batting after Dravid & Tendulkar left.

The Indian Innings was demolished for the 2nd time in 3 days, this time touching a new level of humiliation as they were bundled out for a mere 94 inside 30 overs. Sir Don Bradman had a better career average than this!! Such a shame for 11 men who boast of world class batting line-up who couldnt get past 100.

Being an Indian Cricket Fan, I feel devastated, and I am not able to comment more on this as I am in shambles right now just like the Indian Batting.

Swansea shock Man Utd in Premier League Opener

By : Unknown

Swansea City beat Manchester United 2-1 in Van Gaal's debut as club Incharge

Wayne Rooney and Juan Mata in private conversation.

Manchester United's Premier League campaign under Louis Van Gaal got off to a false start on Saturday as Swansea City stun them 2-1 in the season's opening at Old Trafford.
South Korea midfielder Ki Sung-yueng exploited inattentive marking to give Swansea a 1-0 lead in the 28th-minute with a left-foot shot from the edge of the box.
Newly appointed captain Wayne Rooney equalized early in the second half, but Gylfi Sigurdsson set up an upset victory for Swansea in the 72nd minute with a close-range finish.
This is the 2nd of Swansea's back-to-back wins at Old Trafford, following their shock FA Cup win in January.
Injuries to key players forced Van Gaal to give competitive debuts to Tyler Blackett, 20, and 21-year-old Jesse Lingard.
Lingard lasted only 24 minutes as he was forced off after appearing to jar his knee in a challenge with Swansea captain Ashley Williams.
United dominated possession in the first half, but Swansea struck from their first sight of goal, with Ki stroking home a lay-off from Sigurdsson.
Swansea's fans burst into a chorus of 'You're getting sacked in the morning!' aimed at Van Gaal, who sat impassively in his seat in the dug-out.

He said: "I played it in England and got a boundary for it, so I might try and bring it out in Australia. It's off a short ball. You might see it this summer" speaking to Cricket Australia.

The 2013/14 UEFA Best Player Award Contenders

By : Unknown

Neuer, Robben and Ronaldo make the Shortlist

Paris:Netherlands winger Arjen Robben, German World Cup-winning goalkeeper Manuel Neuer, and Real Madrid and Portugal star Cristiano Ronaldo are the three contenders to win UEFA's Best Player in Europe Award for 2013/14.
The winner will be declared on August 28 in Monaco, where the draw for the group stage of the Champions League is taking place.
One of these 3 men will be the succesor to last year's winner Franck Ribery.
The deciding jury consists of journalists from the 54 member associations of UEFA.
Neuer & Robben both play for Bayern Munich, who won the domestic league & cup double in Germany last season, while Manuel Neuer was the outstanding goalkeeper at the World Cup and Robben impressed the world as the Netherlands finished third.
Ronaldo did not have the best of World Cup's, probably due to a very mediocre side he was leading, but he did star as Real Madrid won the Champions League & Copa del Rey.

Luis Suarez Lausanne

Uruguayan Luis Suarez's 4-month ban for biting Italy defender Giorgio Chiellini on the shoulder during Uruguay's 1-0 win at the 2014 FIFA World Cup has been upheld by the Court of Arbitration for Sport. However, he was cleared to train with Barcelona.
CAS says FIFA's sanctions against Suarez are "generally proportionate to the offence committed."
Suarez will be eligible to play for Barca from October 26, as he remains banned for Uruguay's next 8 international matches.
However, the court's panel said  that the ban on any soccer-related activity is "excessive." & thus, allowed him to train and be involved in promotional activities for the Catalan Club.

Tsonga beats Federer for Rogers Cup title

By : Unknown

The 13th seed Jo-Wilfred Tsonga defeated 2nd seed Roger Federer to win the Rogers Cup title in his 4th consecutive victory over a higher ranked opponent.
He defeated Djokovic, then Murray & then Grigor Dimitrov before overcoming the odds yet again in the final against Federer by 7-5, 7-6 (3) .

The quality of the match picked up late in the first set when the score was tied at 5-5 but soon Federer launched a ball well long to give Tsonga the opening set within 44 minutes.

Tsonga kept the pressure on Federer in the second set & had a break point on 3-2 but could not capitalize.
He also had 2 break points at 4-3 but Federer answered with 2 straight points to make it a deuce.

In the tiebreaker, Tsonga picked up a mini-break at 4-3 and took the next three points for the victory.

The NBA could block the trade that results in Minnesota Timberwolves All-Star power forward Kevin Love going to the Cleveland Cavaliers if it is determined that it violates league rules.
According to ESPN, the NBA is monitoring the process in case an illegal agreement is reached between Love and the Cavaliers.
Yahoo! Sports reported Thursday that the Cavaliers have a deal in place to give Love a five-year, $120 million extension, but both teams have been careful in not publicly acknowledging the trade or a contract extension for Love.
According to reports, Cleveland is sending center Anthony Bennett, guard/forward Andrew Wiggins and a future first-round draft pick to Minnesota for Love.
Minnesota will send Bennett, as part of a package of players, to the Philadelphia 76ers in exchange for forward Thaddeus Young.
Trade talks can take place, but the deal cannot become official until Aug. 23. Cleveland signed No. 1 draft choice Wiggins on July 24. NBA rules stipulate that draft picks cannot be traded within 30 days of their signing.
The Cavaliers cannot offer Love a contract extension before the deal is official.
If the NBA proves that the Cavaliers and Love agreed to an extension before the deal is official, the league can veto the trade and punish both teams.
Love, 25, averaged 19 points and 12.2 rebounds in six seasons with the Timberwolves but never made the playoffs. In the final year of his rookie contract, Love planned to test the free agent market in July 2015 if he was not traded by the Timberwolves.

England Pacers spell Doom for India

By : Unknown

England dominate on Day 1

England v India, 4th Investec Test, Old Trafford, 1st day

England 113 for 3 (Bell 45*, Jordan 0*) trail India 152 (Dhoni 71, Ashwin 40, Broad 6-25) by 39 runs
Manchester: Stuart Broad scalped 6 Indian Batsmen as India were bowled out for just 152 on the 1st day of the 4th Test at Old Trafford on Thursday.
India's final total featured a determined 71 from captain MS Dhoni, who opted to bat first after winning the toss in overcast conditions, after they had been reduced to 8 runs for 4 wickets.
However India registered themselves into Record Books as this was the worst start to the 1st innings of a Test since England were 2 for 4 against South Africa at Johannesburg in 1999.
At stumps on day 1, England were 113/3, trailing by 39.
Ian Bell was 45* & nightwatchman Chris Jordan unbeaten without opening his account after Gary Ballance (37) fell to Aaron late in the day.
Stuart Broad took 6/ 25 in 13.4 overs, including a post-lunch spell of 4/6 in 3.3 overs. Partner James Anderson had figures of 3/46 in 14 overs on his home ground.
Anderson had comeinto this match under a cloud for his persistent 'sledging', but this time, he let the ball do the talking.
But few India batsmen, Dhoni apart, lingered long enough at the crease for it to become an issue on Thursday.
India also equalled the record of 6 ducks in a Test innings, with 3 of their top 4 out for a duck.
Apart from Dhoni, the only other India batsmen to make it into double figures were R Ashwin (40) & Rahane (24).
All of India's intial 4 wickets fell with their score on 8, the 4  batsmen dismissed in the space of 13 balls.
Gautam Gambhir, opening in place of Shikhar Dhawan was first out when he nicked Broad to Joe Root in the gully, followed by Vijay(0), Kohli(0) & Pujara(0).
